How did Coimbra’s ceramics originally start?

The Story of Louça de Coimbra & PÓ Tableware

Louça de Coimbra is one of Portugal’s most cherished ceramic traditions. For centuries, artisans in Coimbra have shaped and painted pottery by hand, blending influences from different cultures. Early designs were inspired by Arabic patterns, while later pieces reflected the delicate blue-and-white motifs of Chinese Ming dynasty porcelain, brought to Portugal by 16th-century explorers. This mix of influences created something uniquely Portuguese - elegant, intricate, and timeless.

At PÓ Tableware, we honour this rich heritage while reinterpreting it for today. Our journey began with a love for handmade ceramics and a vision to connect the past with contemporary living.
By working with local artisans, we ensure that the beauty and tradition of Coimbra’s pottery remain alive, bringing a piece of history to modern homes in a way that is both functional and meaningful.

Traditional Crafting Methods

Every piece of PÓ Tableware is crafted using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. We primarily work with stoneware and earthenware, using traditional plaster molds filled with a carefully prepared clay mixture.

Once shaped, each piece is left to dry naturally under the sun, allowing all moisture to evaporate before firing. This slow and deliberate process ensures durability and preserves the unique character of each piece.

The ceramics are then fired in small kilns, known as "muffles," at carefully controlled temperatures to achieve the perfect finish.
Each step is done entirely by hand, reflecting the care, patience, and skill of our artisans

Hand-Painted Artistry

The beauty of PÓ Tableware lies not just in its form but in the meticulous hand-painting that brings each piece to life. Coimbra’s pottery is traditionally decorated with intricate patterns that reflect Portuguese culture and history.
Designs often feature floral and animal motifs, geometric patterns, and depictions of folklore and daily life.

Our artisans use eco-friendly, lead-free paints, ensuring that our ceramics are both safe and sustainable. Every brushstroke is unique, and each artisan has their own distinctive style, meaning that no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
This level of detail and individuality is something no machine could ever replicate.

The result is a collection of truly one-of-a-kind ceramics—each a small work of art, filled with history, tradition, and human touch.
